South African Passport

Important Notice:
Discontinuation of Temporary Passports

Please note that issuance of Temporary Passports has been discontinued from 1 September 2014.

South African passports are issued only in Pretoria, South Africa. However, applications must still be submitted or forwarded to the applicable South African representative office. Applications take six (6) months or more to be finalized.

Emergency travel certificates are issued at South African missions abroad and take only three (3) weeks to be finalized.

Types of Passports and Corresponding Requirements

Regular Passport

Regular South African passports are issued to South African applicants who are 16 years old and older. They are valid for 10 years and are not renewable. When South African passports expire, new passport applications will have to be filed.

Child Passport

Child passports are issued to children who are fifteen years and below. These passports are not renewable. On their expiry, applications for new passports will have to be filed.

Emergency Travel Certificate

Emergency Travel Certificates are issued to South Africans who have to travel back home urgently for reasons of death, sickness or any other emergency. It is in a page form and may be issued with validity ranging from a month to a year.

Maxi Passports

Maxi passports are 48-page documents meant for frequent travelers. They are the same as regular passports (valid for 10 years) except that they have extra pages to provide for more visa pages.

Checklist of Documents to be submitted in person BY APPOINTMENT:

Application has to be filed IN PERSON with the followings BY APPOINTMENT:

Please ensure that you submit two sets of the application: a) the original application forms with supporting documents, and b) a copy of the completed set.

  • Completed DHA-73 and DHA-529 in BLACK pen and in
    BLOCK letters.
  • Two (2) recent coloured photos in white background (showing head and shoulders measuring 35mm x 45mm with mouth closed).
  • South African valid passport(s)
    (original and copy).
  • South African ID, if available (original and/or copy).
  • Foreign passport and proof of dual nationality from South Africa (original and copy), if any.
  • Permit for permanent residence and naturalisation certificate, if naturalised South African (original and/or copy).
  • Marriage certificate and spouse’s passport to update the SA government about your marriage (original and copy), if applicable.
  • Self-motivated letter from female applicant who would
    like to keep maiden name OR to change to married surname (If so, marriage certificate and spouse passport is required).
  • Unabridged birth certificate is
    required for minor applicant (under 18 years old) AND both parents have to be present to sign for consent for minor’s passport application with proof of their identifications (passports and/or ID).
  • Please take note that full fingerprints will be captured for
    all applicants 16 years and older.
  • Proof of date of departure, if applying for Emergency Passport Certificate
  • Police Loss Report, if applicable (original and copy)

Civic application takes 6-9 months (-/+) for processing by Department of Home Affairs in South Africa
